[At the mention of the king, Jon’s footsteps slow. The name isn’t familiar to him. There were Henrys, Edwards — so close to his father’s name, and so many of them, like Aegons in Westeros, then Elizabeths, Georges, Williams. At least one Victoria. He isn’t sure which one this Edward is, or when he came.

So he looks it up, using the thing in his head, and then he has a better idea of it.]


Edward VII? [Victoria’s son, more than six hundred years ago. His pace picks up again.] You’re as out of your time as I am out of mine. And this Parliament, the House of Lords is part of that? We don’t have that. But a king must take the counsel of his lords before he makes a choice. If too many of them think it’s the wrong choice, he may not be king for long.
