Lordy, it was. An' I miss it terrible.

( ain't no shame for him in admittin' it. he misses his home. his pa an' brothers, aunt ysobel an' all the rest. he misses the cicadas in the evenin', an' sweet tea out on the porch. the creak of the rockin' chair his pa'd made for his ma before she passed on. ain't no place on earth in his blood an' bone like agathine, she shines like a gem in his memory.

he laughs a touch when the fella mentions snow. he was much a stranger to it — didn't see much for himself until '29, an' then later on in new york. but the cold got into him in la gleize. it ain't yet left. but he remembers sittin' with the boys on christmas eve singin' hymns in the eerie night, an' there'd been peace in that. he won't see agathine again, but he had a moment's rest before the end.

his smile's somber, but no less genuine for all that. )

Had a couple'a boys from Michigan in my unit. Funny, they all talked about the snow just the same.

( his hand goes to the pack of cigarettes he'd tucked back in a pocket, an' he pulls it out. offers the fella the last of them with a little nod of his head. )

Go on.
