[ no time, few resources. sounds like a typical day in the neighborhood, or maybe one of the tropes from the dramas that cheris had always loved - standing against certain death, with nothing but willpower and a box of scraps. he has no intention of dying, nor does he see an outcome where either of them will perish this time. a solid maiming isn't off the table, but death? not if juno stands his ground and doesn't balk. not if he manages to back him, without flinching from what is going to be rounding the corner any second.

he can hear it, thundering along in their wake; the closet no longer holds the beast, and he readies his own handheld pike, bracing it along the ground and bending his knees. god, it's been forever since he's been truly in the field, balls-deep in the heart of the brawl, danger closing in with the scent of a golden-eyed beast slick with the blood of others. the spikes are prepared, they stand at the ready. there can be no retreat, he thinks.

well, there could be. it would just require leaving the lady in the lurch. ]

Brace, [ he says instead, grinding his heels into the dirt and shoving the makeshift pike forward.

and then he whistles. another noise to draw the beast in, hopefully too quickly to avoid crashing belly-first into their makeshift phalanx of pikes. ]
This is going to be sick.
