( there are two ways this story ends. she lets him walk away, and if she's being honest with herself she already knows she'll never contact him again. that sort of fear his presence evokes sinks into you. takes root. grows. one day it becomes something monstrous, and you are left with nothing to hold it back. she can change her name, her face, acquire different prosthesis. her body is nothing, just a place she lives. she isn't married to any of her features at all, not so dearly that she'd die for want of them.

and she has to admit, escape is an appealing thing. very few people can unsettle her so completely with so little. she's done business with murderers and scum and thieves, men and women who set the world atremble at their name. but their vitriol and rage and violence is never directed at her. she takes pains to keep it that way.

but. as much as she wants to run, is it not better to leash and collar a dog? bring it to heel? she doesn't delude herself in thinking she can tame him, but she knows how to manipulate. she thinks she can manage him.

(hubris? folly? perhaps. she's weighing her options.)

at length, she cocks one hip and folds her arms. she's a narrow little thing, for all her height. spindly, like a beanstalk. how she manages not to look breakable is anyone's guess. )

Sex is still on the table, you know.
