[ Hama doesn't mind, scooting over so there's more room. Privacy is something you have to fight for, and it wouldn't do to fight right now. Not when she's going to tell a story. She sits up a little straighter and clears her throat. ]
This was when Hama Sula had just built her machine, the one that carried her across the earth. Her legs didn't work anymore so she went everywhere in her machine. She'd been an engineer before she was cast down, and she remembered how to build. But then one day her machine broke, and she could not fix it. And so the storms caught her, and Hama Sula thought she would die when the lightning came. She fell into despair and wept for all the things she would never do.
But, in the darkness just before the storm caught her, she saw a child. A boy who came out from the dead world and dragged her to shelter. This was Avi, who would become her son. And one day he would be called the Stormbreaker, but that's a different story.
[ Hama leans in a little closer. ]
Avi was one of the first Charborn, who had never seen the sun. His parents had been cast down and died, but he looked upon the face of Hama Sula and knew he could love her. But the storm was upon them and so Avi threw himself over Hama Sula and shielded her from the lightning, even though it burned him horribly and he screamed from the pain. And when the storm broke, Hama Sula took Avi as her own and cleaned his wounds. Then she put her hand on his cheek and told him about her machine, and what she would need to fix it. Iron to patch its wounds, and fuel to make it sing and move. And she told her son that he would need to go deep into the earth to find these things, for Hama Sula could only crawl and these places were closed to her. Avi was frightened, for he had never gone into the earth and feared the darkness even more than he feared the lightning.

But do you know what he did?
