( he nods, his eyes bright with emotions he's never been adept at hiding, and annabeth lets out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding in. she's grateful for him, for his bravery, for his self-sacrificing qualities even if they occasionally (often) drive her crazy. she's grateful that he's at her side in the rare moments where she admits to faltering, and that he's willing to cover the gaps even when she isn't.

she just hates that she can't make herself save the day. she knows it's irrational and ridiculous to be afraid of spiders to this degree, but the memories of childhood bites are seared into her psyche; despite her own desire to conquer all her demons, this is one that leaves annabeth frozen, rooted to the spot on the tile of the hallway floor as percy investigates the bathroom.

from the hallway, she sends him a message, her logical brain finally caught up to the options at her disposal. she realizes, too, that she could have done that in the first place, but you know. hindsight's always twenty-twenty. )

I thought getting away from the gods would mean getting away from spiders out to get me.

( alas, alack. )
